He attended Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, in 1862 and 1864. In 1863 he was in military service with the 126th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Later he read medicine and was a graduate M. D., Jefferson Medical College. Jane Kimmel was born August 31, 1845, at Somerset, Pa., daughter of Judge Francis M. Kimmel and his wife, Phoebe Jane Forward. She was educated in the schools of Somerset, Chambersburg and Harrisburg and then studied medicine and was graduated M. D. in 1872 from the Women's Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. She probably was the first woman from Franklin County to become a regularly graduated physician. After graduation she spent some time as intern in a hospital in Boston, Mass. In October, 1870, Dr. Charles Garver and Jane Kimmel were married and after their graduation they located in practice for a time at York, Pa., and then removed to Salina, Kansas, where they were in active practice until 1876 when they came East and located in Scotland, Pa., where they practiced medicine until shortly before Dr. Charles Garver's death, when they removed to Chambersburg where he died on April 3, 1880. While in Scotland Dr. Charles was in failing health and Dr. Jane attended to the greater part of the work. Shortly after her husband's death, Dr. Jane Kimmel Garver was appointed Assistant Physician in the Pennsylvania State Hospital for the Insane at Harrisburg, Pa., and after serving three years in this position was appointed Physician-in-Chief of the Women's Department in this institution. This position she filled with credit until 1902, when, because of ill health, she was compelled to relinquish all active work. She then retired to "Hill Crest Cottage" near Graeffenburg, Pa., where she died on October 9, 1902. Dr. Jane K. Garver, in the earlier years of her professional life, specialized in obstetrics and later in the hospital gave special attention to mental and nervous diseases. She was a member of the Dauphin County Medical Society, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the National Suffrage Society and by faith a member of the Episcopal Church. Dr. Charles Garver was a member of the Medical Society of Franklin County while in Scotland, a Republican in politics and a member of the Episcopal Church. *TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Note discrepancy of birth year.
