D. 1844-1906 James M. Gelwix was born in 1844 in Upper Strasburg, a son of Daniel and Sarah (Cormany) Gelwix. He received his education in the common and select schools of Letterkenny Township and then attended the Chambersburg Academy. He was a student in medicine with Doctors Richards and Montgomery, in Chambersburg and was graduated M. D., 1866, from the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Gelwix located at once in Upper Strasburg and excepting several years in practice in Chambersburg, he spent a busy, active life in the successful practice of medicine at Upper Strasburg. His services as physician were in demand throughout the larger portions of Letterkenny and Lurgan Township. Dr. Gelwix, because of failing health, was compelled to retire from active work in 1893 and was an invalid the remaining years of his life. Dr. Gelwix was a charter member of the society in 1869 and its President in 1884. He served for eight years as a member of the United States Pension Examining Board. He always was interested in community affairs and for a number of years served as School Director in Letterkenny Township. In politics he was a Democrat and by faith a member of the Lutheran Church. His wife was Jennie Zullinger of Upper Strasburg, Dr. John M. Gelwix is a son.
