D. John M. Gelwix was born in 1880 at Upper Strasburg, this County, the son of Dr. James M. and Jennie (Zullinger) Gelwix. He received his education in the common schools and at the Cumberland Valley State Normal School, Shippensburg, Pa., after which he taught for several years in the rural schools of Letterkenny Township. He then studied medicine and attended the Medico Chirurgical College, graduating M. D. in 1905 from this school. After graduation he was a resident physician for one year in the Harrisburg Hospital. Dr. Gelwix began the practice of medicine at Upper Strasburg, this county, but after some months there removed to Chambersburg and has since been following the profession here. Dr. Gelwix has been a member of the Medical Society since 1906. He has been Pennsylvania Railway Surgeon at Chambersburg for some years, devoting his entire time to this work. Dr. Gelwix entered the Medical Service of the World War, September 20, 1918, and was discharged March 13, 1919. He served in Medical Reserve Corps at Camp Wadsworth, N. C., and in M. O. R. C., rank of Captain, at Camp Greenleaf. He is a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church. He married Mary Crall of Waynesboro, Pa.
