GILLAND, M. D. J. C. Gilland was born July 27, 1849, near Shady Grove, Franklin County, a son of Thomas and Susan (Conrod) Gilland and a grandson of Thomas Gilland, born 1777 in Londondery, Ireland, who settled in early life in Quincy Township near Funkstown. J. C. Gilland attended the rural schools of the neighborhood and the select schools of Greencastle, Waynesboro and Strasburg. He taught in the rural school for several years before entering Ursinus College where he was a student through the Sophomore year. Dr. Gilland read medicine with Dr. Wm. Grubb in Greencastle and was graduated M. D. in 1876 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. This same year he located in New Franklin where he was in practice for two years and then removed to Greencastle where he has been in continuous practice ever since. Dr. Gillard married in 1883, Martha M. Snyder, daughter of Henry Snyder of Guilford Township. He is an Odd Fellow and a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Medical Society of Franklin County. He was President of the Society in 1910.
