D. 1820-1894 E. Hartzell was born in 1820 in Adams County, the son of George J. and Mary (Gelwix) Hartzell. Dr. Hartzell attended Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, and then studied medicine with Dr. Gilbert in Gettysburg. He attended lectures at the Pennsylvania Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., receiving his diploma in 1847. Dr. Hartzell first located at Taneytown, Md., remaining for one year and then came to Fayetteville and was in active and successful practice in this village and vicinity during the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Medical Society and its President in 1886. Dr. Hartzell married first, Matilda Hewitt and second, Mary A. Bixler. Two sons studied medicine, viz: Dr. Charles A. Hartzell and Dr. Milton B. Hartzell. Dr. Hartzell died in 1894.
