M., M. D. 1854-1927 M. B. Hartzell was born January 12, 1854, in Fayetteville, Pa., a son of Dr. Ezekiel and Mary A. (Bixler) Hartzell. He was educated at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, Pa., taking his A. B. from this college. He then began the study of medicine and was graduated M. D. in 1877 from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hartzell became in time Professor of Dermatology in his Alma Mater and served as diagnostician and consultant in the Department of Health in Philadelphia. He was an author of an important book upon Diseases of the Skin and contributed many articles to medical magazines. Dr. Hartzell was an active Republican and a member of the Union League. He never married. About five years prior to his death he was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage from which he never fully recovered. At this time he retired from all work, returned to Fayetteville, his birth place and built a comfortable bungalow where he spent the last five years of his life. He was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pa. He died April 7, 1927.
