HEATHERINGTON, M. D. 1778-1835 Andrew H. Heatherington was born in 1778 in Greencastle, Pa., a son of John and Ruth (Smith) Heatherington. John Heatherington was born in London, England. The mother, Ruth Smith, was a daughter of Col. Abraham Smith. Dr. Heatherington was a student with Dr. John McClellan in Greencastle and began the practice of medicine about 1800 or shortly thereafter. In 1803-04 and -05 he was assisting Dr. McClellan in some of his many surgical operations. There is no record of his attendance at Medical College, but inasmuch as his name appears followed by M. D. it is probable he was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Heatherington was Vice-President of the first Medical Society in 1825 and one of the organizers of the Society. He was regarded as a good physician and was in continuous practice in Greencastle and vicinity until the time of his death in 1835. Dr. Heatherington was a Presbyterian by faith and was twice married. The first wife, Jane Patton, had no children. His second wife was Ruhamma Sterret and had two sons. One of these sons, John Heatherington, studied medicine with his father and entered Jefferson Medical College in the same class with Abraham H. Senseny of Chambersburg. He abandoned the study of medicine before completing the course. He afterward resided in Virginia. Some of the descendants of John Heatherington still reside in the vicinity of Winchester, Va.
