HERING, M. D. 1826-1905 Edwin A. Hering was born February 24, 1826, at Double Pipe Creek, Frederick County, Md. He was a son of Daniel Saylor and Margaret (Orr) Hering. He received his education at Mountain View Academy and in 1853 entered the office of Dr. Sidewell in Johnsville, Md., and in 1854 became an office student of Professor Miltenberger of Baltimore and was graduated M. D., 1855, from the University of Maryland. Dr. Hering located at once at Sabillasville, Md. Two years later, 1857, he removed to Waynesboro, Pa., where he remained in active, successful practice until 1879. In April of this year he removed to Virginia locating near Cross Keys on "Madison View" farms which he had previously purchased. Here he lived and farmed with considerable zest until 1892 when he removed to Harrisonburg, Va., where he resided until his death, February 5, 1905. Dr. Hering was a charter member of the Medical Society in 1869 and was a member of the Waynesboro Medical Society. On April 9, 1872, Dr. Hering performed a Tracheotomy on a fourteen month old child for the removal of a grain of corn. This patient is now (1925) living in Waynesboro. It is believed that this was the first operation of this nature to be performed in the Waynesboro section. Dr. Hering married April, 1864, Miss Francis M. Hamilton of Waynesboro, Pa. He was a member of the Methodist Church and belonged to the Masonic fraternity.
