HOWLAND, M. D. 1823-1885 Charles A. Howland was born at Hampden, Delaware County, N. Y., on October 15, 1823, the son of Daniel Howland, his mother's family name being Seth. His early history is not known. In 1851 and 1852 he was teaching school in the village of Scotland, this county, and in 1854 was graduated M. D. by the University of Michigan. After graduation Dr. Howland located at Upper Strasburg where he was in practice until 1860 or 1861 when he removed to Shippensburg and practiced medicine there until 1882. During the Civil War he was for a time in partnership with Dr. Alexander Stewart in the practice of medicine. In 1882 Dr. Howland located in Kansas and operated a farm in connection with the practice of medicine until 1885, when he died at Thayer, Kansas. Dr. Howland was a Republican and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He married Margaret Reed Thompson of Scotland, this county.
