WILLIAM HUMPHREYS There is no known record of Dr. Humphreys' early history, further than tradition tells that he had been a student at West Point and also at Nassau Hall, now Princeton and that he was a man of culture. He came to St. Thomas about 1830 and practiced medicine in that vicinity until 1840 in which year he died. On March 7, 1838, Dr. Humphreys married Miss Mary Maxwell McDowell, born 1808, died 1874, a daughter of Thomas and Mary C. (Davison) McDowell. Dr. Humphreys died without issue and his widow in 1842 married Rev. Alexander K. Nelson and became the mother of Thomas McDowell Nelson, late of Chambersburg, Pa.
