D. 1841-1897 George R. Kauffman was born in 1841 at Kauffman, Pa., the son of Abraham and Catherine (Royer) Kauffman. He received his education at the Chambersburg Academy and then began the study of medicine with Dr. McGill in Hagerstown, Md., and later was a student with Drs. Richards and Montgomery in Chambersburg. He then attended one course of lectures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, after which he was for two years at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City, graduating M. D. in 1867 from this institution. He at once located at Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, but some months later came to his home at Kauffman where he established a large practice and where he continued in active work until his death in 1897. On July 6, 1863, he was taken prisoner at Hagerstown by the Confederates on their retreat after the battle of Gettysburg and carried South. He was confined in Libby, Castle Thunder and Salisbury, N. C., until April, 1865. Dr. Kauffman was a member of the Lutheran Church and a Republican in politics. He married in 1867, Martha E. Kiesecker.
