D. 1825-1890 W. C. Lane was a son of Dr. Nicholas B. and Eliza (Hetich) Lane and was born "On the Square" in Chambersburg in 1825. He received a liberal education and then read medicine with his father in Chambersburg, graduating M. D. in 1851 from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lane located first at Greensburg, Pa., and after four years practice at this place, removed to Maidon, Ill. In 1857 he returned to Franklin County and from 1857 to 1880 practiced medicine successively at Upper Strasburg, Roxbury, and Orrstown. In 1880 he located at Mercersburg and practiced medicine in this town until his death in 1890. Dr. Lane was a surgeon during the Civil War, serving with the One Hundred and Twenty-second Pennsylvania Volunteers and later was surgeon to the Board of Enrollment for the Sixteenth District of Pennsylvania. He married in 1857, Miss C. A. Wakeman of Wheeling, West Virginia. Dr. Lane was a historian of note, particularly as regards the early history of the Cumberland Valley. His writings appeared from time to time in the local newspapers and are of much value as contributions to local history, and if compiled would fill a considerable volume.
