CHARLES TEMPLETON MACLAY 1812-1888 Dr. C. T. Maclay was born September 13, 1812, near Middle Spring in Lurgan Township, the son of David and Eleanor (Heron) Maclay, and died at his home in Greenvillage in 1888. The Maclay family of Lurgan Township is one of the oldest and one of the most prominent families in the military and political history of the Cumberland Valley. Dr. Maclay was educated in the public schools and at Hopewell Academy. He then read medicine with Dr. Wm. Rankin in Shippensburg and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1839. He began the practice of medicine in Greenvillage in 1840, remaining in this village until his death in 1888. He was a very successful physician and enjoyed a large and widely extended practice. He was a very public spirited citizen, always active in local politics and interested in community affairs. He was a devout member of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church and later the Falling Spring Church. In his younger days he was much interested in music and singing schools. He kept a diary of current events for a number of years and was a local historian of some note. He married first, Mary Ann Fraser of Middle Spring, and second, Harriet Mahon of Scotland. Two sons studied medicine: John Andrew Maclay and David Maclay.
