He received his education in the public schools, the Chambersburg Academy and Tuscarora Academy at Academia, Pa. He then began the study of medicine with his father and attended lectures and was graduated, M. D., 1875, from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Maclay located at once in Greenvillage and succeeded his father, who gradually retired from active work because of advancing years. After sixteen years of active and successful practice in Greenvillage, Dr. Maclay removed in 1891 to Chambersburg, Pa., entering into partnership with Dr. R. W. Ramsey and so continued until 1905 when the partnership was dissolved and Dr. Maclay practiced alone until his death in 1908. Dr. Maclay was an active member of the Medical Society, its President 1885 and its Treasurer 1895-1907. He was a member of the Hospital Staff from time of organization until his death, Physician to the Almshouse 1892 to 1896, Treasurer of Franklin County 1897-1900, Chairman Republican County Committee 1899-1902, member of Pennsylvania State Legislature 1903-1904, and in 1905 was appointed Post Master at Chambersburg, which position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of Falling Spring Church. Dr. Maclay married 1878 Miss Mary Pomeroy, a daughter of Judge Joseph and Ann (Crawford) Pomeroy of Academia, Pa. Dr. Maclay died in January, 1908, and is buried in the Falling Spring Churchyard. Dr. Joseph Pomeroy Maclay of Chambersburg is a son.
