Maclay was born in Greenvillage, Pa., on March 7, 1846, a son of Dr. Charles T. and Mary Ann (Frazer) Maclay. He had his education in the common schools and at Tuscarora Academy, Juniata County. He also attended the Agricultural College, Center County, now Pennsylvania State College. John A. Maclay enlisted August 4, 1862, at the age of sixteen years in Company D, one hundred thirtieth regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers and served throughout the War of the Rebellion. In 1865 he entered the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania and was graduated M. D. with honors, in the class of 1867. Dr. Maclay began the practice of medicine at Newburgh, Cumberland County, Pa., where he remained one year and then came to Greenvillage where he was in practice until the time of his death. This occurred on October 11, 1869, when he was accidentally thrown from his horse and died of concussion of brain. Dr. Maclay died unmarried.
