MAXWELL, M. D. 1804-1873 Thomas B. Maxwell was born in 1804 in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Major Hugh Maxwell, who was born in Ireland and immigrated to America in early life. Dr. Maxwell was educated in Philadelphia and had the advantage of a college training and then studied medicine and was graduated M. D. from Jefferson Medical College. He began the practice of medicine in Lancaster, Pa., residing with his father, Major Hugh Maxwell, who at this time was editor of the Lancaster Journal. In 1828 he married Ann Brenneman of Lancaster, who died in 1829. In 1830 Dr. Maxwell removed to Waynesboro, Pa., and in 1833 married Sara Leap and moved to her farm some miles north of Waynesboro. He became a widower again in 1848 and in 1850 married Elizabeth Essick. Dr. Maxwell was in active practice in this vicinity from 1833 to 1860, practically the greater parts of Quincy and Guilford Townships. In 1860 he moved to Jackson Hall, one mile south of New Franklin and died there in 1873. While living at Jackson Hall, because of failing health and a desire to retire from active work, he answered only the most urgent calls. Dr. Maxwell was the father of twelve children and was an older brother of Dr. Wm. Maxwell who practiced medicine near Marion. He is buried in Grindstone Hill Churchyard.
