D. 1839-1898 S. H. McElroy was born June 21, 1839, at Scotland on what is usually known as the Dice farm, now owned by M. K. Burgner. His grandfather McElroy had come from Bucks County and settled on this land prior to 1800. He was a son of Samuel and Abigail (Blythe) McElroy and as a young man attended the Chambersburg Academy for a time and then entered Spangler's Drug Store, Chambersburg. While thus engaged he began the study of medicine with Dr. J. C. Richards. Early in the Civil War he enlisted as a private and was assigned to dispensary work, serving in various hospitals in the East. He attended lectures at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City, and was graduated M. D. in 1865 from this institution. Dr. McElroy located at once at Mott Haven, New York, and for thirty-three years was a successful physician and a respected citizen of this town. He was a Mason and a very active member of the G. A. R. His death occurred January 5, 1898, and is noted in the minutes of the Medical Society.
