D. 1808-1855 D. S. McGowan was born August 25, 1808, near Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa. His grandfather was of Scotch descent and had emigrated from the north of Ireland. D. S. McGowan was educated at Dickinson College, Carlisle, and then followed lectures at the Washington Medical College, Baltimore, Md., graduating from this college with a degree of M. D. in the spring of 1832. He began at once the practice of medicine in Everett, Pa., but in the fall of 1832 he came to Fayetteville and bought the practice of Dr. Charles P. Cummings who discontinued medicine to enter the ministry. Dr. McGowan lived in Fayetteville and followed his profession the rest of his life, and became one of the leading physicians of the County. He died at forty-seven years of age and his body was interred in the Covenanter Churchyard at Scotland, Pa. His grave there is not marked. Dr. McGowan married in 1832, Anna Thomson, born 1809, died 1877, a daughter of John Thomson and a granddaughter of Alexander Thomson who first settled at Scotland, Pa.
