He was a son of John H. and Sidney E. (McClellan) McLanahan, and a grandson of Dr. John McClellan of Greencastle. He received his education at the Chambersburg Academy and then read medicine with Dr. J. C. Richards, Chambersburg, taking his degree M.D. 1863 from the Jefferson Medical College. He at once entered the Army as Acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Army, and served through the war. He then returned to Chambersburg in 1865 and was in active and successful practice in his native town until his death in 1915. Dr. McLanahan was an active member of the Medical Society. He signed the call in 1868 for the reorganization of the Society and always took a lively interest in its affairs. He was President of the Society in 1878 and its Treasurer 1909- 1914. He was a member of the original Hospital Staff. Dr. McLanahan had large private interests and was the owner of much valuable property in the town. He was a director of the National Bank and held many other responsible positions in his long and active business career. He was a Republican in politics and a member of the Central Presbyterian Church. He married 1870 Rebekah A. Austin of Chambersburg, Pa.
