McLaughlin was born at San Jose, California, on May 7, 1901, a daughter of Charles W. and Susan Blanche (Young) McLaughlin. The parents are natives of Franklin County and later returned from California and located in Mercersburg. Miss McLaughlin graduated in 1917 from the Mercersburg high school and then spent two years in Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., and one summer term at Pennsylvania State College. Deciding to study medicine she then entered the Women's Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., and was graduated M. D. in 1923 from this institution. After graduation Dr. McLaughlin spent one year as intern in South Side Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., and about seven months in West Philadelphia Hospital for Women, and in 1925 from April to August was an interne in the Philadelphia Hospital for Contagious Diseases. In August, 1926, she located in Mercersburg in the general practice of medicine. Dr. McLaughlin is a member of the Medical Society, a Presbyterian by faith and a Republican in politics. She resides with her parents at Hotel Mercer, Mercersburg, Pa.
