D. 1807-1893 James Montgomery was born near Academia, Pa., on November 20, 1807, the son of James and Ann (Coulter) Montgomery. He was tutored by an uncle, Rev. John Coulter of Academia, and then studied medicine and was graduated M. D. about 1830 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Montgomery practiced medicine at Ickesburg, Pa., until 1835, when he located at Fannettsburg as successor of Dr. Thomas Grier. He was in practice here until 1867, when he retired and for a time resided in Newville, Cumberland County. Later he moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, where he died May 27, 1893. Dr. Montgomery's practice extended throughout Path Valley and into the adjacent valleys on either side. He married on May 1, 1834, Martha Scott Elliott of near Fannettsburg. He was a Republican in politics and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
