The father, James Montgomery, who was born in Chester County, Pa., in 1808, was the son of James Montgomery, the immigrant who was born in County Antrim, Ireland. Dr. Montgomery received his preliminary education at Lititz Academy and at Chambersburg Academy. He then served three years apprenticeship in the drug business. At the end of the three years he decided to study medicine and entered the office of Dr. J. C. Richards, Chambersburg, Pa. He received his degree M.D. in 1858 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Montgomery began at once the practice of medicine in Chambersburg. In 1864 he became a partner with his preceptor, Dr. Richards, and so continued until the latter's death in 1872. Dr. Montgomery became a prominent and successful practitioner and continued active in the work until 1904, when, because of failing health and advancing years, he retired and made his home in Florida with his son, Dr. James H. Montgomery, where he died in 1911. He was a Charter Member of the Medical Society in 1869, Secretary of the Society 1877 to 1883 and twice its President 1876 and 1895. In 1892 Dr. Montgomery read before the Medical Society a paper "History of the Medical Society, with Sketches of Some Early Practitioners," and in 1902 a valuable paper on Dr. Hugh Mercer, the first medical practitioner to locate in Franklin County. Dr. Montgomery was a Democrat in Politics and a member of the Masonic Fraternity. His wife, whom he married in 1862, was Catherine Ann Brough, born 1840, died 1899, a daughter of Peter Brough, a prominent business man of Chambersburg. Two sons of Dr. Montgomery entered the medical profession, Dr. Peter Brough Montgomery and Dr. James H. Montgomery.
