He was educated in the Chambersburg High School and the Chambersburg Academy, and then read medicine with his father in Chambersburg, taking his degree M.D. in 1886 from the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City. The same year he began the practice of medicine in Chambersburg in partnership with his father, succeeding to the practice when the latter retired. Dr. Montgomery was a member of the Medical Society, and its President in 1902, and for many years a member of the Hospital Staff. He served one term as Coroner of the County, was a member of Borough Council and the unsuccessful candidate for State Senator in 1892. Politically he was a Democrat, by faith a Presbyterian and a member of Masonic Fraternity. He married 1889 Miss Jessie Bonbrake, daughter of Emanuel J. Bonbrake, Esq., of Chambersburg, Pa. His death occurred January 7, 1910, at Buena Vista, Florida, where he had gone for a rest in the home of his brother, Dr. James H. Montgomery.
