D. Dr. Palmer was born October 3, 1847, on the homestead in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pa., a son of Jonas and Catherine (Flack) Palmer. He grew to manhood on the home farm, attending the rural schools and the Chambersburg Academy. He spent three years teaching in the rural schools of Hamilton Township before beginning the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Samuel G. Lane in Chambersburg. He was graduated M. D., 1878, from the University of Pennsylvania and then spent a year or more in hospital work after his graduation. Dr. Palmer began the practice of medicine in Chambersburg as the partner of S. G. Lane his preceptor and so continued until Dr. Lane's death, and since that time has occupied the same offices continuously to the present. He was admitted into the Medical Society in 1882, was its President in 1890 and the Secretary, 1884 to 1888 inclusive. For a number of years he was surgeon for the Cumberland Valley Railroad. He was physician to the County Home, 1882 to 1885. Dr. Palmer was most active in the organization of the Chambersburg Hospital and was the head of the Surgical Department of the same from the time of organization until very recently. Dr. Palmer is the dean of the Medical profession in Chambersburg and his experience and knowledge was frequently sought in consultation by the profession in all parts of the county. Dr. Palmer is a Republican, but no politician and never sought office. He is a member of the Zion Reformed Church. Dr. Palmer never married.
