D. D. F. Royer was born in 1852 in Waynesboro, the son of Daniel W. and Marie (Adams) Royer. He received his education in the common schools and attended Normal School for a time. He began medicine as a student of Dr. George R. Kauffman, Kauffmans, Pa., and after the usual course was graduated M. D. in 1875 from the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Royer located at once at Shady Grove and after about ten years successful practice at this place, removed to Dakota. In 1897 he registered in California and has been since then in active work at Orange, California, where he now resides. In both South Dakota and California Dr. Royer has been prominent in professional, political and business circles and has held many important positions, some of which are here enumerated: While a resident of Alpena, S. D., he was Vice President and director in the Bank of Alpena, U. S. Pension Examiner for 12 years, Member of State Board of Pharmacy, City Treasurer for three years, County Health Officer for six years, Member of State Legislature two terms, Indian Agent at Pine Ridge Agency when Sitting Bull and Big Foot were killed. He also was the secret custodian who conveyed statehood papers to Washington, representing South Dakota and arrived in Washington, D. C., two hours ahead of the man from North Dakota, whereby South Dakota was first registered as a State. Since living at Orange, Calif., Dr. Royer was one of the organizers of the Bank of Orange, the largest now in the city, has been a member of City Council and Mayor two terms, Pension Examiner fourteen years and is President of several oil and mining companies and a director in a number of other companies. He also is Surgeon at Orange for the Santa Fe Railroad, Pacific Electric Railroad and the Southern Pacific. Dr. Royer married Anna M. Hurley. He is a Republican in politics and a member of the Christian Church. Fraternally he is a Shriner, an Elk and an Odd Fellow.
