Shoemaker was born in Chambersburg, Pa., March 18, 1852, and died October 11, 1910, in Philadelphia. He was a son of Lewis A. and Mary M. (Greenawalt) Shoemaker. After his graduation from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1872, he matriculated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., and was graduated M. D. in 1874. He immediately received an appointment as Demonstrator of Anatomy in his Alma Mater. In 1880 he became Demonstrator of Materia Medica and in 1883 Lecturer on Diseases of the Skin in Jefferson Medical College. In 1886 he became Professor of Therapeutics and Materia Medica in the Medico Chirurgical College and was an active teacher and investigator for more than twenty-four years. Dr. Shoemaker was master of several languages, a close student and a prolific writer on medical subjects. He married in 1876 Miss Jennie M. Logan of Pittsburgh.
