ALEXANDER SPEER Alexander Speer, son of John and Mary (Long) Speer, was born at Stony Batter, Franklin County, Pa., and died in Washington, D. C., in 1854. He was a physician and practiced his profession in Gettysburg, Pa., before 1828. In that year he located in Mercersburg and practiced there from 1828 to 1841. He was a cousin of James Buchanan and through his influence received an appointment to a position in the U. S. Treasury Department, Washington, D. C. Dr. Speer married first, Margaret Windom of Gettysburg who died in 1832. He married second, Maria H. Coyle, born 1798, died 1839.
