D. M. W. Stofer was born in 1887 at Ambler, Pa., the son of Richard C. and L. Emma (Bender) Stofer. He received his preliminary education at the Norwich High School, graduating in 1906, and the began the study of medicine and was graduated M. D. in 1910 from the Medico Chirurgical College, Philadelphia, Pa., and served one year as resident physician in the Medico Chirurgical Hospital and six months in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Dispensary of the same hospital. In 1915 he had a three months post graduate course in the Medical Department of Columbia University. Dr. Stofer began the practice of medicine at New Franklin in 1912, succeeding Dr. A. B. Grove. In 1915 Dr. Stofer removed to Chambersburg and was in active practice in this town until 1917, when he entered the Medical Corps in the World War as First Lieutenant and was discharged with the same rank, March, 1919. He served nineteen months in France, the longest service being as attending surgeon, Headquarters, Base Station No. 1, at Sault Nazarie. After leaving the army he assumed the duties of Medical Director in the Norwich Pharmacal Company, of which company his father was then President, and has held this position until the present. Dr. Stofer was a member of the Medical Society while living in Franklin County.
