Christian L. Suesserott was born 1791 in Hanover, Germany, and died in Chambersburg in 1833. Dr. Suesserott received his preliminary education at the Chambersburg Academy, then conducted by William Van Lear Davis, Esq. He then studied medicine in Chambersburg with Dr. A. H. Senseny and received his degree M.D. in 1851 from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. He also attended dental lectures and received the degree D.D.S. from Philadelphia College of Dental Surgery. Dr. Suesserott located in Chambersburg in 1851 and was in active practice here until 1859, when he was elected Professor of Physiology and Mechanical Dentistry in his Alma Mater and filled this position acceptably until 1862. He then resigned and came back to Chambersburg to better care for his family and business interests during the unsettled conditions of the Civil War. He resumed practice of medicine and so continued until the time of his death on July 16, 1886. In 1879 in association with Dr. Chas. H. Merklein he established in Chambersburg the "Jenner Vaccine Farm." Soon after Dr. Merklein withdrew and the business was conducted by himself and his son and successor, Dr. L. Fred Suesserott. In this business the Suesserotts, father and son, were the pioneers in the Cumberland Valley. Their product was in demand not only locally, but in distant places. The United States Government at times bought this vaccine in large quantities. Dr. Suesserott was the first President of The Childrens Aid Society of Franklin County. He was a very active member of the Medical Society of Franklin County, and its President in 1877, and he was a frequent contributor to current medical journals. He married 1852, Julia E. Smith of Chambersburg. His death was caused by Brights Disease and he died in the same room in which he was born.
