D. 1865-1926 J. S. Swartzwelder was born December 30, 1865, on a farm near Breezewood, Bedford County, Pa., and died suddenly at his home in Mercersburg, Pa., on February 4th, 1926. He worked on the home farm and attended and later taught in the country schools. After graduating from the Lock Haven State Normal School, he studied medicine at the University of Vermont and from there matriculated at the Baltimore Medical College, completed the course and graduated M. D. in 1890. He located at once at Needmore, Fulton County, but one year later entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., and received his second degree M. D. in 1892 and at once resumed his practice at Needmore. In 1895 he married Rosalie Sipe of Fulton County and in 1906 because of the ill health of Mrs. Swartzwelder he removed with his family to California and while there completed a post graduate course at the University of Southern California. In 1907 he came East and located in Mercersburg and was in active practice in this borough until the time of his death. Dr. Swartzwelder was admitted to the Medical Society in 1908 and retained membership for several years. He was a director in the First National Bank of Mercersburg, President of the Board of Health and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his widow and two sons, Russel Harold and Wallace Ray. The latter is now a medical student in the University of Maryland.
