D. A. A. Thomson was born in 1841 on the Thomson Homestead east of Scotland, a son of Samuel and Mary (Kyner) Thomson. Samuel Thomson was the youngest son of John Thomson and a grandson of Alexander Thomson, who in 1771 emigrated from Scotland with his wife and twelve children and settled at Scotland, Franklin County, Pa., and gave to this village its name. Dr. Thomson was educated at Fayetteville Academy and taught several terms in the rural schools. After farming a short while he began the study of medicine with Drs. Howland and Stewart in Shippensburg. He spent his first year in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and then entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., and was graduated M. D. in 1865 from this school. He located at once in Newburg, Cumberland County, and practiced medicine in that neighborhood for about ten years when he retired. In 1875 he was elected Treasurer of Cumberland County and in 1879 was elected Sheriff of this same county. Dr. Thomson did not again resume the practice of medicine. He married in 1864, Susan Rosetta Frazer of Middle Spring, a sister of Mary Ann Frazer who married Dr. Charles T. Maclay of Greenvillage. Dr. Thomson died in Carlisle.
