D. E. J. Zook was born in Mifflin County in 1841, the son of David M. and Rebecca (Byler) Zook. He attended the National Normal Institute in Ohio and was graduated in 1874 from this school. He then studied medicine and after a course at a Philadelphia Medical School he was graduated M. D. in 1878. Dr. Zook, after graduation, began the practice of medicine in Mifflin County and then for a brief time was in practice at Orrstown, this county, before locating in 1881 at Fannettsburg as the successor of Dr. John S. Flickinger. In 1888 Dr. Zook removed to Newville, Cumberland County, where he was in practice until his death. He was a member of the Medical Society in 1887. He married in 1880, Rebecca J. Huey of Mifflin County.
