March 22, 1860 in Markeville, Perry county, PA, son of Reverend Samuel Irwin and Elizabeth (Kline) Shortess, both natives of Perry County. Samuel Irwin Shortess is a descendant of Samuel Irwin an officer in the Colonial Army during the American Revolution. The mother is of German descent. Dec. 22, 1881 Dr John D. Shortess m. Minerva L. dau of Andrew J. and Matilda (Barber) Spitter of New Berlin, PA. Matilda Barber Spitter is the dau. of the Rev. James Barber, who was a pioneer of the Evangelical Church. Dr. John D. Shortess and Minerva are the parents of four children. 1. Florence Minerva Shortess m. W.R. Sterner and had two sons, Glen Dale Sterner and John D. Sterner. 2. Jesse Cloyd Shortess m. Luella Frank. They had one dau. Olga Frank. Jesse Cloyd d. Jan 4, 1920. 3. Samuel Irvin Shortess m. Anne Irene Reynolds. Two children, John Reynolds Shortess and Anne Louise Shortess. 4. Erma M. Shortess
