Thompson. The Franklin County cemeteries are in Vol 17. Thanks to Carolyn Shearer for extracting this information. Special thanks to Charlee Wilson for painstakingly editing the work from scanned images of volumes on microfilm. The journals are now in the possession of the Western PA Historical Society in Pittsburgh and are extremely fragile. Cemetery readings are partials of most cemeteries. >From the Journals of Josiah V. Thompson, Vol 17, pg 564ff. Transcribed by Charlee Wilson Aug 14, 1926 {Driving west on the Lincoln Highway from Chambersburg towards Fort Loudon].... Mr Hoerner directed Elmer, his driver to stop at Chas Ford's residence where there is a big weeping willow tree on the left & looking ahead across the fields toward North Mountain where some buildings appeared on an elevated plateau, he said was the old farm of his grandfather Peter Stenger where he was raised. Just to the right thereof & below it in the valley on the creek, the west branch of the Conocoheague, was the old Peter Shearer farm known by Mr H. in his younger days as the Jonathan Shearer (the son to whom Peter gave it see page 560) farm, but he didn't know Jonathan, who he thought had died before his time. These lands & where we had stopped are all in Peters Tp Franklin Co, Pa & just beyond a short distance is a road to the left down which a tall marker points the way to old Fort Loudon no trace of which he says except a marker designating the sites is visible. This fort was on the Matthew Patton farm near or adjg the Peter Stenger & Peter Shearer farms and which Patton farm my informant Mr Hoerner now owns. From his talk, I see he owns several other farms as well. At this road too, commences on the Lincoln Highway as we proceed toward the town of Fort Loudon the old Conrad Stenger farm of 350 A laying on both sides of the highway appears & a little further on, on the right hand side near the road is a small stone house which he built & in which he moved to pass his last days. Just beyond & adjoining it, is a larger stone house stuccoes in which he lived many years & raised his family. He came from Berks Co, Pa & settled on this farm in 1793 & Mr H. says the Pike was built through here in 1810 to 1815. Proceeding on West we soon came to the Fort Loudon town cemetery on the left in which Mr Hoerner said his mother was buried just beyond the cemetery toward the town is a road to the left into which we turned & just to the right & beyond the end of this road we came to a drive & walk gate the entrance to: The Stenger Graveyard, Peters Tp near & adjg Fort Loudon, Franklin Co, Pa Aug 14, 1926 7:02 PM The gloom was gathering, but with Elmer's help, I made note of the following inscriptions going into the tallest white marble monument to which Mr Hoerner directed us, the monument of his grandfather, Peter Stenger & finding the others, he said mainly to the right thereof. 295. Left 7:46 PM After getting in the auto again (where I had dropped this pen when I got out & a Flagel boy found it) I asked Mr H. if he thought Peter Shearer was buried here & he thought not. He thought he would have been buried at the Waddles g.y. down the west branch of the Conococheague 2 or 3 miles, near Mercersburg Junct a g.y. which he said was hard to get to. He thought however, that he would be buried there & would have a marker.
