(McConnellsburg, Pa.) October 26, 1899 Alex. C. McKibbin, editor of the Mercersburg Journal, was engaged to be married to Miss Emily V. Greathead of this place. The day for the wedding, Wednesday, October 25, 1899, was set, the cards were out, and every arrangement seemed to have been made. About ten days ago, for reasons best known to himself, he quietly walked away from his office, boarded the train, and went to Philadelphia, and has not since returned. This somewhat unexpected movement, coupled with the report of Mr. McKibbin's financial embarrassment, led Miss Greathead to declare the wedding off indefinitely. Squire M. J. Slick, from whom Mr. McKibbin had purchased the Journal, became alarmed and issued an execution and placed in the hands of the sheriff of Franklin county, who will sell the Journal plant on Friday. The whole matter was entirely unexpected and has caused quite a sensation, owing to the high social position of the parties. We feel very sorry for the occurrence; for the Journal seemed to be riding on the topmost wave of prosperity, and we regarded Alex as a most promising young man. We trust that, in some way, a satisfactory explanation may yet be made, and that the matter will be set entirely straight before the dear public.
