Butts James Beaver Butts, a veteran of the Civil War and a prominent Odd Fellow, died suddenly at his home in Loysburg on Saturday, June 22, of hemorrhages. He was born in Franklin county May 4, 1839, and had reached the age of 68 years, one month and 18 days. Mr. Butts was a son of Henry and Esther Butts and in March 1860, was married to Elizabeth Carpenter; in December 1904, he was married to Mrs. Mary Speelman, a daughter of Joshua Pennell of this county. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in Co. C, 133rd Reg. Pa. Vol. Inf.; later in Co. A, 184th Regiment, becoming a leader of the regimental band in January, 1864. Mr. Butts was an honest, upright man and a good citizen, a member of the Bedford Post, G.A.R.; Loysburg Lodge No. 775, I.O.O.F., of which he was a charter member and secretary for 17 years, and a member of the Presbyterian church. He leaves his wife, one son, Albert of Altoona, and two daughters, Annie of Waterside and Jennie at home; also a number of brothers and sisters survive. Funeral services were held at Loysburg at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. K. Ash of Martinsburg. Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA, June 28, 1907
