M.A. Gherst, well known to many Chambersburgers, died at Millersville yesterday morning after a short illness. Colonel Gherst went to that place from his home at Lebanon several days ago to visit his daughter. Although he had been somewhat indisposed, at the time he did not believe his condition was serious. After his arrival there he continued to grow worse and the end came. Colonel Gherst will be best remembered as one of the orators at the Old Home Week celebration here two years ago. He was also of the first fours [?] to enter Chambersburg following its burning by McCausland in 1864. He was a member of the Scotland School Commission and an honorary member of the Kittochtinny Historical Society. Public Opinion, Chambersburg, PA; February 19, 1916
