Born in McConnellsburg, he was the son of the late Frank and Jesse Deshong Hess. He retired form the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, where he was employed as a weightmaster. He was a charter member of the Pleasant Ridge Nazarene Church in Harrisonville. He is survived by his wife, Nina Bard Hess; three daughters: Maxine Mellott of McConnellsburg, Velva Warsing of Allentown and Quetta Walls of St. Thomas; one son, Herbert J. Hess of Chambersburg; one sister, Hettie Sites of Harrisonville; 16 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Services were held at 2:PM Friday January 8, at the Pleasant Ridge Nazarene Church in Harrisonville. The Rev. Richard Vandervort and the Rev. George Spangler officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery. The Howard L. Sipes funeral Home in Harrisonville was in charge of arrangements. Fulton County Historical Society Card File
