Newell, RR2, Shippensburg, was killed July 7 [1969] in action in Vietnam, according to a telegram received by his parents Sunday, from the War Department. He was previously reported missing on July 12. Born Nov. 6, 1948 at Shippensburg RR2, he attended Shippensburg Area Senior High School and had been employed by Bogar Lumber Co. On March 13, 1968 he became engaged to Saundra Shew of Ft. Loudon. He entered the service June 14, 1968, underwent basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ, followed by 8 weeks advanced training at Ft. Knox, KY. SP4 Newel had been in Vietnam 8 months and three days, with four months of his Vietnam tour remaining. He was with the Troop B, Second Squadron, First Cavalry, US Army. In addition to his parents, he is survived by eight sisters, Mrs. Linda Varner, Shippensburg; Barbara J., Anna M., Sandra K., Cristina M., Audrey E., Valerie L., and Betty Jane; and by four brothers, Robert K. Newell, Jr, Newville; John A., Rodger L., and Brian R. Also his grandfather, Charles B. Newell, OrrstownRR1. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Van Scyoc Funeral Home, 112 W.
