He was born in Fulton county, in 1835, and removed to Chambersburg in 1888. Previous to this he had been a merchant in McConnellsburg. He was a soldier of the war, serving in the 158th and 200th regiments of Pennsylvania volunteers. He lost his left arm at the last charge at Petersburg at the close of the war. As he entered the fort there he was struck several times, one shot taking his cartridge box entirely away. He was a member of the First Lutheran church of this place and of Housum post G. A. R. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. Daniel Gilbert, survive him. People's Register, Chambersburg, PA, October 23, 1896
