John Shafer, the well-known usher at the Cumberland Valley passenger station, whose illness has been noted in this paper from time to time, died Monday at midnight. He had been ill for a number of months, suffering from pulmonary trouble complicated with dropsy. His sufferings at times were intense. Mr. Shafer was in the fifty-third year of his age. He was born in Greene township, at the old Caledonia furnaces, and had lived in the county nearly all his life. He was employed in his early life at the iron furnaces at Caledonia and Pine Grove and he took up railroading when a young man, having been employed by the Pennsylvania and Cumberland Valley companies. After a faithful service for the Cumberland Valley road Mr. Shafer was rewarded with the position of station usher here and he was well-known to the patrons of the road and because of his politeness and affability was very popular. He was a life-long Republican and took a great interest in the ascendency of his party. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the following secret societies: Patriotic Order Sons of America and Shepherds of Bethlehem. Mr. Shafer is survised by his widow, who was Miss Mary Leiper, and the following children: John Shafer and Miss Edith Shafer, this place; Howard Shafer, Carlisle; also the following sisters: Mrs. Maggie Peiffer, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Pogue, Harrisburg; Mrs. P. C. Oliver, Mrs. Harper Rinehart, Mrs. Sadie Biggs, this place. The funeral arrangements have not been made as yet.
