Born Aug. 9, 1911, in Markes, he was a son of the late Ferris Gilbert & Eva Geneva Hornbaker Starr. A dairy farmer, he also worked for the former H.J. Heinz Co. in Chambersburg for more than 23 years, retiring as a supervisor of the cleanup crew in 1976. He was a member of New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, Chambersburg; Waynesboro Fish & Game Association, and Pennsylvania Farm/Game cooperatives. He and his wife, Leda A. Newell Starr, were married 59 years on Sept 10. Besides his wife, surviving are six daughter, Ida May (Mrs. James) Gochenaur of Dillsburg, Alta (Mrs. Richard) Holden of Chambersburg; Patsy (Mrs. Bruce) Kauffman of Browns Mills, NJ, Mary (Mrs. F. George) Werner of Bainbridge, Betty Jo (Mrs. Clarence Jr.) Sipe and Joyce (Mrs. W. William) Mellott, both of Waynesboro; a son, David W. of Waynesboro; 22 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Barton M. of Chambersburg; two stepsisters, Ruth DeLauder and Becky (Mrs. Junior) Gordon, both of Mercersburg; and five stepbrothers, John of Mercersburg, Roy of Chambersburg, F. Gilbert Jr. and Merle, both of Greencastle, and Joseph T., of Fort Loudon. He was preceded in death by a sister. Service will be at 11 am Monday in New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, The Revs. Dr. Robert Verno and Maurice Bender will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Social Services, 2700 Luther Drive, or New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, 1575 Mont Alto Road, both Chambersburg 17201.
