Taylor To Solomon Slaybaugh December 16, 1828 Chambersburg, PA Mr. Solomon Slaybaugh, Dear brother in law. I take the opportunity of riting you these few lines to inform you of our good health hoping these few lines may find you all enjoying the same state of health. I long to see you all in person but my official dutys will not allow me to leave home so long. I hope you will rite to me on the receipt of these few lines and let me now how you all are. Father was here for the 4 last weeks and is well. He has left this week for Gettysburg. I expect he will bee to see you before long. Our town is at present time in an uproar owing to the Small Pox being here. There has been several deaths of this deseas and we hav no idea whare it is going to stop. It is spreading over the town and the Collored people are getting it now. It has not made its appearance in ower family. Wea hav ten of our on family and 14 prisioners. Other wise the place is healthy. Our Court commences on the third Monday of January. Wea hav several convicts in for Trial and two of which I expect will go to Cherry Hill Penatentiary. We would be glad to see you and hope you will visit us this winter. I think it will be intirely out of my power to come to see you until my 3 years Expires one of which is just now round. I attend to the duties of my office myself and my son Shannon is the Deputy Sheiff though he mostly keeps the jail though sometimes when I get the Aug he helps me to ride. If you cannot visit us please rite and let us now you are. Please except my kindest lov yo you and all enquiring friends. John W. Taylor Sheriff Additional Comments: Note: Mary Taylor, wife of Solomon Slaybaugh, was the sister of John W. Taylor, and a daughter of Robert Taylor. John W. Taylor was a Sheriff of Franklin County, Pennsylvania. John also owned and operated the Indian Queen Hotel on Front Street (now Main Street) in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. This building was burnt during the 1864 confederate Army's burning of Chambersburg.
