Alexander, captain During the fifties, there were three military companies in this county, one in McConnellsburg, W. S. Nelson, captain; one at Harrisonville, Rowland Austin, captain, and one in Wells Valley, John B. Alexander, captain. These companies formed a battalion, in charge of a military inspector with the rank of major. This position was held respectively by Major Barnhart, Major Mellott and Major Austin. In 1844, Mr. Alexander was commissioned Captain of the Wells Valley Riflemen by Governor David H. Porter. Of that company of 44 men, as per rolled filed July 4, 1844, but three are now living - David G. Duvall, of Bellwood, Pa., Wm. A. Gray, Adams, Nebraska, and George Foster, of Wells Valley. It will be interesting to many of the older folks to see the names of the men who composed that company: Captain John H. Alexander. 1st Lieut. George Whitehill. 2d Lieut. John Piper. Corporals John Wishart, John Dunlap, Wm. A. Gray, Jeremiah Duvoul. Sergeants James White, Jonathan Bowman, Samuel Willet. Kimber A. Moore, George Rapp, William Patterson, John Foot, Jr., Joseph Green, Jesse P. Edwards, Er Willet, Henry Horton, William Lockard, Jas. Speer, David Copenhaver, John White, Jr., Jonathan Horton, Joseph Oakman, William White, Nelson Stevens, Walter H. Moore, Ezekiel White, Benedict Stevens, George Ashman, William Frick, John Black, Jr., Jos. A. Markly, Benjamin O'Neal, Peter Gaster, Squires Oakman, George Fesler, David L. Duvall, Jacob B.
