(McConnellsburg, Pa.): November 09, 1899 Captured Dispatches From Jeff Davis Man Who Helped Win Battle of Gettysburg. Daniel A. Carl,a well known citizen of Hancock, Md., and a brother of the late William Carl, of Warfordsburg, died at his home on Monday morning, at the age of 59 years. He served three years in the 6th U. S. Cavalry during the war of the Rebellion, and had many thrilling experiences. On the first day of July, 1861, at Greencastle, under Captain John Dahlgreen, he captured important dispatches from Jefferson Davis to Gen. Robert E. Lee, from two Confederate mail carriers. Information obtained from these dispatches materially assisted the Union generals in winning the great battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Carl leaves a widow and six children: five sons and one daughter. Prof. Ed., the oldest, is principal of the public schools of Hagerstown, Md., and Frank is city editor of the Cumberland (Md.,) Daily News. Mr. Carl was a member in good standing of Warfordsburg Lodge No. 601 I. O. O. F., of Hancock Camp P. O. S. of A., and of Martinsburg, W. Va., Post G. A. R. All these societies attended his funeral on Tuesday, in a body, and assisted in the last sad rites. He served four years as postmaster of Hancock during Harrison's administration. The funeral took place from his late residence at Hancock, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Services conducted by Rev. C. M. Clymer, of the Presbyterian church.
