The Fulton County news. (McConnellsburg, Pa.): January 18, 1900
Last week mention was made by our New Grenada correspondent of the serious illness
of Mr. D. K. McClain, of that place, and on Sunday, we were shocked to learn of his
death, which occurred last Saturday evening, at the age of 35 years, 6 months and 8
days.
The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. McClain, and spent his youth on his
father's farm. About a dozen years ago, he was united in marriage with Miss Jennie,
a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Cunningham. In 1893, he embarked in the mercantile
business at New Grenada, and with the incoming of McKinley's administration,
received the appointment of postmaster at that place, which position he held at the
time of his death. In February of last year, he had the misfortune to lose his store
by fire. Soon after this, he went to Robertsdale and remained in a store there until
a few weeks ago, when he left with view to going into the coal mines long enough to
become acquainted with the practical workings of the business, when he expected to
complete a course in theoretical mining and engineering. Just before leaving the
store, he slightly wounded a finger from a sharp nail which protruded from a nail
keg. In about a week, this, at first, a seemingly unimportant scratch, began to be
painful, his hand and arm became swollen, and it became apparent to his physician
that blood poison had developed. Everything was done human skill could devise, but
death ended the dreadful suffering on last Saturday evening as before stated.
The deceased, several years ago, found peace in Christ, and connected himself with
the M. E. church, since which time he has been faithful to the church of his choice;
and, as the dark days of suffering came upon him, and his friends stood by with
aching hearts, his face bore a radiance such as can come only to those whose souls
are filled with the precious hope of a blissful eternity.
His remains were laid tenderly to rest in the cemetery at the Bethel church, New
Grenada, on Monday, followed thither by a very large number of sorrowing friends.
