This copy contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives. frito13@aol.com OLD TAYLOR CEMETERY GREENE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA During the restoration of the Old Taylor Cemetery in July 1999, 15 engraved stones, including 3 double stones, were uncovered and transcribed. Before the restoration and fencing of the cemetery that year, the cemetery was overgrown and plenty of woodchucks and cows accounted for the fact that not a stone was standing. This burial ground was for many descendants of John Taylor Sr (175?-1848) and his wife Mary (Kiser) Taylor. We believe the unmarked graves of John and Mary Taylor are also here. The earliest burial on an engraved stone was 1863. The stones account for some of the family members of John and Maryıs children- Francis, Abraham and William. While there were only 15 engraved stones uncovered, there were more than 40 other gravesites marked by head and footstones, with an occasional stone marked with handmade notations ("X", "B T"). The cemetery is located on a hilltop off of Hero Road, about a mile WEST of Jollytown (in Gilmore Twp). Hero Road is just above Dunkard Creek, and the road to the cemetery is just before the junction of the road that goes into W. VA., where the town of Hero once stood. On July 21, 2001 most of the people from the 1999 restoration project and many new cousins returned to dedicate a granite memorial marker to John and Mary (Kiser) Taylor. The marker reads: THE OLD TAYLOR CEMETERY IN MEMORY OF JOHN TAYLOR 175_ - 1848 REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN AND MARY KISER TAYLOR 175_ -184_ BELIEVED BURIED HERE IN UNMARKED GRAVES On the other side of the stone are engraved the names of the participants of the cemetery restoration and their relationship to John Taylor. A Patriot Grave Marker from the Sons of the American Revolution is embedded in the stone. [See below.] Double Stone CAROLINE RUSSELL 1874-1963 DONLEY RUSSELL 1881-1933 ELLIS, Son of ELI & M.M.
