NOTES ON JAMES HOOD OF GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA By John J. Hood, October 29, 2000 In searching for my ancestor, Archibald Hood, in Greene County, PA, I have come across a number of records regarding a James Hood. Aside from Archibald Hood and his son, John, this James Hood is the only other Hood found living in Greene County, PA prior to the Civil War. He *may* be of some relation to Archibald Hood. Family "lore" has claimed that Archiabld Hood had two brothers who came with him from Scotland/Ireland around 1790. These brothers were not named--all it said was that one went to Massachusetts and the other went to either Kentucky or North Carolina. James Hood of Greene County, PA *may* have been one of those brothers. 1810 Pennsylvania Census, Greene County, Jefferson Township JAMES HOOD 1 male less than age 10 1 male age at least 26, less than 45 1 female age at least 16, less than 26 1816 Greene County, PA Tax Records (for calendar year 1815) HOOD, JAMES "Removed out of township" 1817 Greene County, PA Tax Records (for calendar year 1816) HOOD, JAMES Taxed for 1 cow ($10) and 1 dog 1818 and 1819 Greene County, PA Tax Records (for calendar years 1817 & 1818) No Hoods found 1820 Greene County, PA Tax Records (for calendar year 1819) HOOD, JAMES Taxed for his occupation: Shoemaker ($10) 1820 Pennsylvania Census, Greene County, Jefferson Township JAMES HOOD 1 male age at least 16, less than 26 1 male age over 45 1 female age at least 10, under 16 1 female age at least 16, less than 26 1 female age over 45 1821 Greene County, PA Tax Records (for calendar year 1820) HOOD, JAMES "Nothing" [sic] NOTE: No James Hood found in Jefferson Twp., tax yrs. 1822-1831 1830 Pennsylvania Census, Greene County, Cumberland Township JAMES HOOD 1 male age at least 20, less than 30 1 male age at least 50, less than 60 2 females age at least 20, less than 30 1 female age at least 50, less than 60 NOTE: No Hoods found in Cumberland Twp., tax yrs. 1798-1832 1840 Pennsylvania Census NO JAMES HOOD FOUND IN GREENE COUNTY. COMMENTARY: This James Hood appears to have been born between the years 1770 and 1775. He appears to have been a man of very modest means and moved frequently. No land records have been found for James Hood in Greene County thus far. The eldest female in the 1810 census record was born between 1784 and 1794. The eldest female in the 1820 and 1830 census records was born between 1770 and 1775. This may suggest that he was married twice. There is little doubt that he had a son that was born between 1804 and 1810. The appearance of the two younger females in the 1820 and 1830 census records causes some problems. Assuming that the 1810 census record is correct (and that is a BIG assumption), then the two females should have been listed in the 1810 census (since these girls appear to have been born between 1800-1804 and 1804-1810) . IF (and let's re-emphasize IF) James Hood was married twice, then these young females in his household in 1820 and 1830 may have been step-daughters.
