All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Brian Core greenhouseguy@juno.com February 3, 2007, 10:26 pm Declaration For Revolutionary War Pension Greene County State of Pennsylvania Ss On this 10th day of September 1832 personally appeared in open court before the judges of the court of common pleas for the county of Greene State of Pennsylvania now sitting Joseph Fox a resident of Whiteley Township county & state aforesaid aged seventy five years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed the 7th day of June 1832. That he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year 1776 with Captain David Steel and served in the 11th Virginia Regt. of the regular line under the following named officers. That he enlisted at Pike Run on the Monongahelia river below where Brownsville now stands, with Captain David Steel, for three years or during the war. That he thinks he enlisted some time in December 1776. That he is certain that it was in the winter of 1776-7 – That he was first marched from the place of his enlistment above mentioned to Pittsburgh – That he thinks some time in May they were marched by express from Pittsburgh to Head quarters in the East but cannot recollect when it was. That in September 1777 he was in the battle of Brandywine. That he thinks his col. at this time was col. Freebacker. That at this time the fall of 1777 he was in Genl. LaFayettes Brigade. That in October following the battle of Brandywine he was engaged in the battle of Germantown after which they went into winter quarters at Valley Forge. That in the spring of seventy eight at the opening of the campaign he was marched into Jersey & was in the battle of Monmouth in June of that year (78) – That after the Monmouth battle Genl. Wayne requested of Genl. Washington 1100 men that he might select out of the whole army for the purpose of taking Stony Point – and that he was taken for this purpose, out of Capt. William Johnstons company to which he at this time belonged to join Genl. Wayne in this expedition, and that he was at the taking of Stony Point on the right column commanded by Cols. Freebacker & McClurg, and that in the fall after taking Stony Point he was returned to his old company (Capt. Johnstons). That the fall or winter of 1778-9 he was marched with Washingtons army into Virginia for the purpose of contending with Lord Cornwallis. That he served four years in the regular service with the main army in New Jersey & Virginia. That some time in 1781 at Fredericksburg he was exchanged & sent up the Susquehanna with the Pa. Rangers commanded by Capt. Robinson and that he performed two years service at Northumberland town near Sunsbury – That he performed this two years service wholly under Capt. Robinson having served in all six years during the Revolutionary war. That he was discharged at Northumberland by Capt. Robinson & Lieutenant Vancamp – which discharge he still has and is herewith transmited, that he has proof of his services. Sworn and subscribed Sept. 11th 1832 Joseph (his mark) Fox Wm. T. Hays Prothy. This applicant is now in the receipt of a pension from the state of Pennsylvania. He hereby relinquishes every pension or annuity whatever except the present & declares his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state except the state of Pennsylvania. 1st He was born in Morris county New Jersey in the year 1758. 2d He has no record of his age. 4th [there was no 3rd] By enlistment. This applicant is not acquainted with any clergymen. Joseph (his mark) Fox Joseph Whitlatch and Isaac Wright of Whitely Township Greene County being duly sworn according to law do depose and say that they are well acquainted with Joseph Fox who has sworn to the foregoing declaration that we believe him to be seventy five years of age that he has always been reputed & believed to have been a soldier of the revolution in the neighborhood where he resides and we concur in that opinion. State of Pennsylvania County of Greene Ss Be it known that on the twenty second day of March, AD eighteen hundred and fifty-three, before Samuel A. Gilmore, Esq. Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Elsey Fox, a resident of Pery township in said County, and made oath according to law that she is the widow of Joseph Fox, who was a soldier in the war of the Revolution, and a pensioner of the United States at the time of his at the rate of $80 per annum, that she was married to the said Joseph Fox on the [blank] day of August eighteen hundred and thirty seven in the township and county aforesaid, that her said husband died on the 13th day of December eighteen hundred and forty seven, that she makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining such a rate of pension as may be due under any of the laws, regulations, or decisions, that have been, or may hereafter be adopted, and that she still continues his widow.
