All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Brian Core greenhouseguy@juno.com January 21, 2007, 7:36 pm Declaration Of Leonard Garrison, Revolutionary War Pension "Greene County Pennsylvania Ss On the 17th day of September 1833 personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the court of common pleas of said county now sitting Leonard Garrison aged seventy three years who being duly sworn &c. depose and say on oath to the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed the 7th of June 1832 That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as follows viz That he first entered the services of the United States in as a drafted militiaman at a place called Jarrets Ford in Greene County Penna under command of Samuel Swingler in July 1777 for two months which he served out in guarding + defending the frontier against the Savages in Greene + the adjacent parts of Virginia + Pennsylvania that a few days after his return home there was an alarm of Indians and he was called out again and went under command of Stephen Gapen who left them shortly after they started and he continued under subordinate officers to serve against the indians for something more than a month say six weeks when they returned that the next Spring 1778 in May he was drafted to go to Hannah's town in Westmoreland County under command of Lieut. Henry Myers that they marched into Fayette County to a place called Union town here he was detailed to go with Col. Alexander McClean on to the Virginia line between Monongalia + Fayette Counties near the Ohio river that he was out on this service two months that the next time he went out for any length of time was in the fall of the year 1778 in September he went out in a party of which George Garrison had the command and they were out about six weeks. That after these tours which amount together to about seven months besides then he was appointed + selected as a Minute man to be ready at a moments warning on the frontiers when the savages were very troublesome constantly lurking about committing murders and robberies in the settlement that in this capacity he was called out + went on short tours sometimes a week or two + some times a day or two without any particular officers as scouts and as spys it is therefore impossible to Enumerate each tour or the number of them or times of each then he continued to (illegible) in the frontier + to serve in the character of a scout or Spy + minute man to the end of the war a space of five years and upwards and he states that upon a (illegible) estimate he would be safe in saying that the whole time he served as above mentioned in short tours would amount at least to one year. That he has no documentary Evidence nor does he know of any which to prove his services. That he relinquishes all claims to any other pension or annuity whatsoever except the present + declares that his name is not on the rolls of the agency of any state. That in answer to the questions required to be put by the war department he answers as follows viz 1. That he was born in Frederick county Maryland the 5 day of May 1760 2. That he has no record of his age at Present it having been destroyd 3. That he went out as a drafted militia man as a volunteer spy + scout against the indians 4. That his officers were Swingler, Gapen, Myers, McClean, Col McFarland +c. 5. That he resided when he went out in Greene County Penna then claimed by Virginia now in Pennsylvania not far from the Ohio where he still resides 6. That he has no written discharge 7. That the Reverend John Fordyce + John Niceley his neighbors will prove his reputation as a soldier +c. his Leonard (LG) Garrison mark Sworn & Subscribed in open court Sept 17 1833 E. Hook Prothy Joh Fordyce a clergyman + John Nicely both of Greene county Pennaneighbors of the applicant do certify that we are well acquainted with Leonard Garrison who has made oath to the foregoing declaration that we believe him to be seventy three years of age that he is reputed + believed to be a soldier of the revolution + we concur in that opinion + further that he is a man of good standing in the neighborhood + of undoubted truth + veracity Sworn & Subscribed in open court Sept. 17 1833 E. Hook Prothy John Fordyce Johannes Kneisel (in German) And the court do declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that Leonard Garrison who has sworn and subscribed the foregoing declaration was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states, and the court do further certify that it appears to them that John Fordyce who has signed the foregoing certificate is a clergyman resident in Greene county Penna and John Nicely who has also signed the same a resident of Greene county Penna and is a credible person and that this statement is entitled to credit ("Declaration of Leonard Garrison," Leonard Garrison Pension No. W7503, U. S. Revolutionary War Service, War Department Collection of Revolutionary War Records (Record Group 93), National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.).” Additional Comments: There were two men named Leonard Garrison in what is now Greene County, Pennsylvania during the Revolution. The elder Leonard Garrison, also known as Lawrence Leonard Garrison, was the brother of Frederick Garrison. He was born in NJ in 1745 and was married twice, the second time to Elizabeth Gray. The younger Leonard Garrison was the son of Frederick Garrison. His wife is believed to have been Rebecca Long, probably the daughter of David Long, Sr. This pension application was made by the younger of the two Leonard Garrisons.
